NEW VIDEO: Silver Linings of Sporting Kansas City's 2023 MLS Season
You gotta look at the bright side of things!
The one thing that I will say about this horrible Sporting KC season is that it’s inspirational. I was worried for a little that I wouldn’t have much to say about it, but that’s proving not to be the case. I have a piece on SKC that I’m going to publish tomorrow as well. They’re really providing a torrent of new concepts to write or otherwise create around, they’re less of a soccer team and more of a muse, like if Olivia Newton John in Xanadu was constantly crashing into walls and falling down steps on her roller skates. If she was getting Matty Mantz’d on the Leap of Faith throughout that film, that’s what Sporting Kansas City is to me at the moment. It is a fascinating sort of impotence they’re displaying so far this year, it’s total failure in so many senses, with very little feasible end in sight.
My brain is messed up, so the losing has actually made me more interested. I did all of that hand-wringing over whether to check out or not a few weeks ago, and it’s clear that I’m not doing that. I should make it clear, though: This does not mean that I enjoy it, it’s just that I find meaning in it. I want to see this team turn it around. I want to see them find something that works out in New England this weekend, score like three or four goals, and just cruise through the rest of the year. I am not and will never be at the point where I want to see them fail… However, I am intrigued and a little envigorated by the creative inspiration I’m finding through seeing a team I love falter each weekend.
And, look, the glasses of water method, it can’t hurt! It surely can’t hurt!
